Best Practices and Guidelines with respect to Psychometric CROM for use in Research on Tobacco and Nicotine Containing Products

CROM Technical Report

March 2024 Ref. CROM-269-1-CTR

In 2018, CORESTA approved the formation of the Consumer Reported Outcome Measures (CROM) Task Force to establish best practices and guidelines for the development and use of consumer reported outcome measures in research on tobacco and nicotine-containing products. This Task Force defined a CROM as: a measurement instrument where data are collected by self-report from the subject of research.

The CROM TF distinguishes between “Psychometric” CROM, which are intended to measure underlying (unobservable) attributes of an individual, and “Descriptive” CROM, which are intended to measure observable characteristics and behaviour.

This document represents the final deliverable of the work focused on Psychometric CROM, i.e., guidelines articulating best practices for the selection, development and validation, modification, and implementation of Psychometric CROM for use in research on tobacco and nicotine-containing products.
