LaForge method for synthesis of acyl-pyridines has been modified, and six acyl-pyridines have been synthesized, namely : 3-acetylpyridine; 3-(3-methylbutanoyl) pyridine; 4-sec-butyl-3-(2-methylbutanoyl) pyridine; 4-iso-propyl-3-(2-methylpropionyl) pyridine; 4-ethyl-3-propionyl-pyridine; 4-n-propyl-3-butanoylpyridine. The 4-alkyl-3-acylpyridines above mentioned, except 4-n-propyl-3-butanoylpyridine, have not been reported in literature. The yields of 3-acetylpyridine and 4-n-propyl-3-butanoyl-pyridine have been improved in the synthesis. In addition, the method of Barbier's One-step procedure for the preparation of alcohols has been modified and was also sucessfully used for the synthesis of the above mentioned acyl-pyridines. The six compounds were added into Virginia and blended cigarettes as tobacco additives. It was found by sensory test experts that the six compounds synthesized can enhance the cigarette flavor, reduce irritation and improve the taste of cigarette smoke. They could be used as ingredient in cigarette flavoring compounds.
