A number of sucker control chemical formulations for inhibiting axillary bud growth in tobacco have been evaluated. The fatty acid esters and presently the C8 and C10 fatty alcohols were the most effective in control of sucker growth. Generally, contact-type chemicals resulted an increased yields through reduced sucker development. Increased levels of reducing sugars, and decreased levels of total alkaloids. Other agronomic and physical parameters showed some changes as a result of treatment but these changes were minimal.
