Progress in antiphytoviral chemotherapy

Virus diseases cause even now considerable losses in tobacco crop. In this situation antiphytoviral substances for chemical control would mean major advance. Most important progress was achieved using analogs of catabolites and anabolites of pyrimidine bases, which are processed by the host plant to an active antiphytoviral agent. Further progress was achieved in combining the mentioned substances with other antiphytoviral substances, above all with substances owning membrane activity as well as by the use of granulated substances. The latter reduce the 5-6 treatments, necessary because of their rapid breakdown in spray application, to two applications, one in the seedbed and a second during planting in the field. Moreover, the antiphytoviral production begins in the first stages of development. This is important for regions where the virus vectors are active from the early beginning.
