A dosage of 165 aluminum phosphide pellets per 1,000ft3 was sufficient to fumigate tobacco cases in freight containers but a dosage of 100 pellets was inadequate. Case liners of 30-lb Kraft paper laminated with 30-lb asphalt restricted fumigant penetration. Leakage of phosphine from freight containers frequently occurred at the joint between the floor and sidewalls. Tobacco in freight containers may be fumigated at temperatures between 40° and 50° F. if the exposure period is extended from 72 to 96 hours.
