An analytical method for low boiling carbonyl compounds in cigarette smoke was studied. Cigarette smoke was passed through a 1% solution of p-nitrophenylhydrazine in 3 N sulfuric acid and the resultant p-nitrophenylhydrazones were extracted with ether. An aliquot of the solution was subsequently analyzed by glass capillary column gas chromatography. This method was applied to the analysis of low boiling carbonyl compounds in the smoke from several kinds of cigarette.
