Four fungicides (mancozeb, dimethomorph, fluazinam, and iprodione), four bacteria (Bacillus spp., isolates BA4, BA39, BA55, and BA56), and one fungal biopesticide (Gliocladium virens GL- 21) were evaluated in the greenhouse for control of target spot caused by Thanatephorus cucumeris on seedlings of two fire-cured tobacco cultivars (DF 485 and T.R. Madole). Tobacco seeds were planted in Styrofoam trays by direct-seed or seed-and-transfer and placed in float beds. Foliar sprays of BA55, fluazinam, and mancozeb provided substantial control of target spot on both cultivars and across both planting methods in 1993. Fluazinam and mancozeb significantly reduced target spot severity on both cultivars with direct-seeded plants only in 1994. Dimethomorph and BA55 provided control on DF 485 only. lprodione controlled target spot, but phytotoxicity was observed in both years. Direct-seeded plants of both cultivars treated with either BA55 or fluazinam or untreated were transplanted to the field for further evaluation in both years. Environmental conditions were not conducive for further development of target spot in either year. The yield of DF 485 was significantly greater than T.R. Madole across all foliar treatments in 1993. Fluazinam and BA55 had no negative impact on leaf quality or yield across both cultivars in both years. The effects of host age, cultivar, and BA55 foliar treatment on target spot severity was studied. Across host age, BA55 significantly controlled target spot on DF 485 and T.R. Madole. Across both untreated and BA55-treated seedlings, plants inoculated at 2 wks of age had significantly less target spot than older seedlings.
