18 volatile organic components (VOCs) in 7 kinds of cigarette packing material were determined by purge and trap-gas chromatography. The results indicated that: 1) The average recoveries of the VOCs were ranged from 91.32% to 99.37% with the RSDs of 0.17% to 2.74% and the limits of detection of 0.02 to 1.42 ng/cm2; 2) No benzene was detected in all samples; 3) The m-xylene and p-xylene could be successfully separated and accurately determined by the capillary column of DB-WAXETR; 4) Carton samples contained more VOCs and at higher concentrations, especially propyl acetate and n-butyl acetate; while residual VOCs in packet blanks were at lower concentrations.
