A qualitative and quantitative analysis of naphthalene and alkynaphthalenes in Latakia tobacco was done. 62 different alkylnaphthalenes were detected by GC-MS analysis. 28 of these have been identified by comparison of their GC retention times with those of the authentic compounds on two different capillary colomns, with Dexil and FFAP as stationary phases. We identified beside naphthalene the following compounds : 1-methyl-, 2-methyl-, 1-ethyl, 2-ethyl-naphthalene, 1-propyl-, 2-propyl-naphthalene, all ten theoretical isomeric dimethylnaphthalenes, four trimethyl-naphthalenes, isobutylnaphthalene and five ethyl-methyl-naphthalenes. Several C3- and C4- naphthalenes and one C5- naphthalene could be identified only tentatively because the authentic compounds were not available. The concentrations of the alkyl-naphthalenes in Latakia tobacco were in the range of 1 to 10 ppm. The majority of the compounds were present in amounts of 1 to 3 ppm. Alkylnaphthalenes are of importance for the aroma of Latakia tobacco. They modify and enhance the burnt and medicinal aroma of the Latakia phenols in such a way that the flavor is shifted to smoother and more agreeable smoky notes with earnthy understones.
