Cigar tobacco production in Pennsylvania

GREEN B.; HARTLEY M.
Lancaster Leaf Tobacco Company, Richmond, VA, U.S.A.

Tobacco production in Pennsylvania occurs on more than 2,000 hectares. Historically, PA-41 and Mayland were the dominant types produced in the state. After 2004, additional types, such as Burley, and Green River One Sucker, gained prominence. More recently, another transition has occurred, whereby Connecticut Broadleaf is now produced on commercial farms. The introduction of Connecticut Broadleaf has been widely accepted by producers because of their experience with PA-41 and other air-cured styles. In addition, the intensive management required for production fits well with the local Amish culture. Our presentation will highlight Connecticut Broadleaf and PA-41 production in Pennsylvania as well as the unique management practices and equipment used by local farmers.
