Cellulose acetate web is a cigarette filter material comprised of short cut cellulose acetate staple and cellulose acetate fibrets (a highly fibrillated form of cellulose acetate). The web is produced in a wet lay, papermaking process where these components are combined into a sheet-like material. After the web is formed, it can be corrugated and transformed into filter rods. Once incorporated into the web, fibrets can be used to entrap small particles without the use of adhesives. Filter additives such as charcoal and flavorants can be loaded into the web, at high weight percentages, in the paper making process. A study was conducted to determine the filtration efficiency of CA Web as a function of filter tip characteristics and a mathematical model was generated to predict filtration performance. In the study, the filtration characteristics of the Web (for both particulate and gas phase compounds) was compared to cellulose acetate tow and other commercial cigarette filter materials.
